Somewhere we can be ourselves

Following on from Vikie’s guest post, here’s one from Neil – another of our former speakers – on the subject of ‘home’.

It would be easy to leap straight to a cliché about home…

There’s no place like it. It’s where the heart is. It’s people, not a place. And it’s a good place to hang hats and bring bacon.

It makes sense that the idea of home attracts clichés: it’s incredibly important.

As humans, we instinctively create home wherever we are. Even returning to a holiday house after a long day of sightseeing is a comforting landing to somewhere familiar.

At its best, home means safety; somewhere we can be ourselves, free of any masks we might feel forced to wear outside.

Home happens when we create memories with family, friends and loved ones.

It’s partly a place, partly a state of mind that we carry with us. And it’s a fundamental need for every person.

We all deserve a home.
